The story
Every developer, writer, and designer knows the moment — you are deep in a presentation, a Photoshop file, or a codebase, and Ctrl+Z runs out. The undo history only goes so far. Getting back to an earlier version means either losing hours of work or spending more time hunting through autosaves than it would have taken to just redo it from scratch. I had this frustration for years. What I always wanted was simple — every time I press Ctrl+S, make a copy. Silently, automatically, with a timestamp. So I always have a trail to go back to. In 2026 I finally built it myself. VersionTrail does exactly that and nothing more.
What it does
Monitors any file or folder in real time. The moment you save, it creates a timestamped backup automatically — no effort required.
Key features
- Three monitoring modes — single file, folder, subfolders
- Timestamped backups on every save
- Smart debouncing — no duplicate backups
- Live activity log with filters
- System tray — runs silently in background
- Lightweight — minimal CPU and memory
